Shall we turn non-performing PSUs and Vacant Lands to SEZs
Farmers own the land for Generations. Majority of the Population in India depend on Agriculture. So in a sense they are employed though the returns are meagre. So if we go by argument that SEZs create employment. How far are we true. Why dont we mecahnize our farming to increase the productivity of our farm lands. We can also invest in Agriculture allied industries to create more employment by a balanced private participation. There is also a provision by which agricultural land before being converted to non-agricultural purposes is given a balanced judgment by the Government. If we take land from Agriculture are we balancing our environment by giving barren lands to be converted to agricultural use and compensation to the farmer to relocate and have alternate employment.
To improve the competitiveness of our industry, can we convert our non-performing public sector undertakings and government lands to SEZs so that it generates more employment. This also limits the congestion of cities and overburdening our infrastructure facilities. We can have a feedback from our already established SEZs on their performance and contribution to employment. India is abundant in Natural resources does not necessarily be that we exploit the maximum or be exploited the maximum by MNCs. A balanced exploitation is also called for and all the SEZ units are to be planned first on their individual merits and after gaining public acceptance the land requisition be made. Not creating a SEZ and allocate units to whoever asks for it and for considerable amount of time the SEZ facilites remain non-performing capital assets to industry
